Aleph Alpha Adaptive Platform
AI Assistants Germany
Sovereign enterprise AI platform for compliant knowledge work. Alternative to ChatGPT.
Details
Aleph Alpha’s enterprise AI stack is built in Heidelberg and Berlin for the public sector, defence, and regulated industry. The company now presents it as the Adaptive Platform; the PhariaAI name no longer appears anywhere on its site. It deploys on-premises, air-gapped, or as sovereign SaaS, and bundles document extraction that handles dense tables, technical drawings, and poor scans while quoting its source passages and abstaining when the evidence is thin; an agent runtime with approval gates on steps that carry consequences; model serving behind a Responses API; and tenant, identity, and admin management as platform services.
Two packaged solutions sit on top. Workspace Essentials is the chat-and-agents surface, where every answer cites its sources and is traceable to a named user, model, and prompt. The Industrial Engineering Workbench compares and structures requirement specifications and runs standalone or as a Siemens Polarion extension. The in-house model is Kolibri, generally available since October 2026: a mixture-of-experts with 78B total and 3B active parameters, German and English, a one-million-token context window with 256k recommended for serving, Apache 2.0 weights on Hugging Face, trained end-to-end in Germany and aligned to the EU AI Act. It needs two H100s or a single H200.
No price list is published; every deployment runs through sales. That is the honest gap against ChatGPT, which is a seat you buy in an afternoon against an integration you have to staff. In return the weights, the hosting, and the audit trail are yours. On 16 September 2026 Aleph Alpha signed a definitive merger agreement with the Canadian company Cohere, under which Cohere shareholders would hold roughly 90% of a merged company headquartered in Toronto and Berlin, with Heidelberg kept as a research centre. As of 13 October 2026 the deal is still awaiting clearance in Canada and Germany and has not closed.
About Aleph Alpha
Aleph Alpha is a Heidelberg-based AI company focused on sovereign, enterprise-grade generative AI products and infrastructure, employing around 200 people across four German locations. It released Kolibri on 3 October 2026, a 78-billion-parameter mixture-of-experts model trained to operate natively in German, with a technical report covering copyright, data protection and EU AI Act compliance.
In April 2026 Aleph Alpha announced a merger with Canadian foundation-model lab Cohere at a combined valuation of roughly $20B, with Cohere shareholders holding around 90% of the new entity. A definitive agreement was signed on 16 September 2026. As of 5 October 2026 the merger remains subject to regulatory approval and has not closed, so Aleph Alpha is still German-controlled. Once it completes, parent control sits with the Toronto-based Cohere group and this listing will be reclassified.
