PrestaShop

E-commerce France

Open-source online shop platform with 250k+ merchants worldwide. Alternative to Shopify and WooCommerce.

Details

PrestaShop is a French open-source shop engine, PHP on Symfony 6.4, free to download and run on your own hosting. Version 9.1 arrived in March 2026, supports PHP 8.1 through 8.5, and makes Hummingbird 2.0 the default theme — a Bootstrap 5 storefront that PrestaShop measures at over 95% compliance with European Accessibility Act requirements. The platform ships a catalog, checkout, multi-store, an Admin API, and a marketplace of paid themes and modules. PrestaShop counts more than 250,000 merchants, concentrated in France, Spain, Italy, and Poland.

There are two ways to buy it. Classic is the free source: you supply hosting, the domain, and the work. Hosted costs EUR 24 excluding VAT per month on annual payment or EUR 29 with no commitment, after 14 days free, and includes the install, 50 GB of hosting at Gandi, automatic VAT calculation, GDPR and cookie tooling, and support six days a week. Neither offer takes a share of revenue. The real spend on Classic is modules, which run from tens to several thousand euros each.

Against Shopify there is no transaction cut and no platform that can change its terms under you, paid for with upgrades, security patches, and a module market of uneven quality. Against WooCommerce the bill and the shared-hosting economics are the same, but PrestaShop is a standalone application rather than a WordPress plugin, so a content site sits beside the shop instead of around it. Since February 2026 PrestaShop has been owned by cyber_Pixel, a holding 79% controlled by the Warsaw-listed group cyber_Folks, with PrestaShop SA still incorporated in Paris.

Since February 2026, PrestaShop is owned by Cyber_Pixel — a holding entity majority-controlled (79%) by Cyber_Folks SA, the Polish hosting group listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange; Sylius founders hold the remaining 21%.
