Scaleway Compute Instances
Cloud Computing France
Scalable virtual machines for general-purpose cloud computing. Alternative to Amazon EC2, Azure Virtual Machines, DigitalOcean Droplets, and Google Compute Engine.
Details
Scaleway Compute Instances are virtual machines from the French cloud provider Scaleway, part of the Iliad group. Four instance families cover the usual shapes — Development, General Purpose, Compute Optimized and Memory Optimized — across four regions: Paris, Amsterdam, Warsaw and Milan, each with three availability zones. Block storage with snapshots, VPC private networking, IPv6, SLAs and an API, CLI and Terraform provider all come as standard, and Savings Plans discount committed usage by up to 25%.
The commercial difference from the American hyperscalers is egress. Scaleway advertises free egress with no data-transfer fees, where both AWS and, above a threshold, DigitalOcean bill outbound traffic per gigabyte — on an egress-heavy workload that is the line item that decides the comparison, not the instance price.
The honest limit is scope rather than capability. Four European regions against AWS’s global footprint matters for latency outside Europe, Milan offers only the newest Gen-3 instance types, and the surrounding managed-service catalogue is a fraction of the size, so an application that leans on AWS-specific services has more to rebuild than the virtual machines themselves.
About Scaleway
Scaleway SAS is a French simplified joint-stock company at 8 rue de la Ville-l’Évêque, 75008 Paris, registered at RCS Paris under SIREN 433 115 904. Aude Durand is président and Damien Lucas directeur général; Deloitte & Associés audits the accounts. The general terms of service are governed by French law, and the French text is the authentic version.
Ownership runs through the iliad group to one French family. iliad held 99.56% of Scaleway at 31 December 2025 and consolidates it in full. iliad SA is itself 98.88% owned by iliad Holding, which is more than 95% controlled by Maya, wholly owned by the Niel family group.
Scaleway ended 2024 with 519 staff, down from 548, after its data centre business was carved out into OpCore; iliad sold half of OpCore to the French infrastructure fund InfraVia on 31 March 2025, so the Paris halls DC2 to DC5 are now run by a company Scaleway does not sit above. iliad does not break out Scaleway’s revenue, and the most recent figure in the French register is EUR 103.2 million of turnover for 2022 against a net loss of EUR 8.8 million.
The catalogue covers compute, block and object storage, networking, managed Kubernetes, serverless and GPU capacity across four multi-availability-zone European regions and more than 65 points of presence, with live sites in France, the Netherlands, Poland and Italy and announcements for Sweden and Germany. Scaleway puts its GPU fleet above 5,000 cards. It holds the French ANSSI SecNumCloud qualification alongside ISO 27001, ISO 14001 and ISO 50001, and still trades the Online, Dedibox and BookMyName brands it grew out of.
